Alternative energy plays the central role in our efforts to control
greenhouse gas emissions, decrease air pollution, and reduce our dependence on
foreign oil. Research and deployment of solar, wind, and other forms of
alternative energy will stimulate our economy and create jobs.
The United States has vast solar and wind resources, but the best of these are
located primarily in remote regions of the country. For example, there is more
wind power potential in North Dakota than any other state (over 1 trillion
kilowatt-hours/year), but they are not linked to the rest of the country with
enough transmission capacity. And there is enough solar power in a 100 x 100
mile square in the desert southwest to power the entire nation – if only there
were sufficient transmission lines to distribute it.
As Median Wind’s network of powered highways expands out from the initial 15
sites, they will eventually connect with each other to create a new smart grid
for America. With new high voltage transmission lines along our highway system,
the solar power of the Southwest and the wind power of the Midwest could be
transported to population centers around the country. Without an upgraded
electricity grid, these valuable resources will remain untapped.
